Corrections

“The work done by A.A. volunteers has a profound impact on the persons behind the wall fortunate enough to hear the volunteers speak, as well as those, such as myself, charged with helping them prepare to re-enter society.”

Note

In 1977 the General Service Office formed a committee to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to the alcoholic who is confined in our correctional facilities. The activities of this committee are based on and governed by the 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous.

We cooperate with the administration of correctional facilities but are not affiliated with them.

Service Work Behind the Walls

Our District carries the message of Alcoholics Anonymous into local correctional facilities through regular meetings and service work. AA meetings are currently held at eight correctional facilities in our area—five prisons and three jails.

Through the efforts of volunteers and local AA groups, members are able to bring the message of recovery to individuals who may not otherwise have access to an AA meeting. This service provides an opportunity for those inside to learn about the AA program, share their experience with others, and find a path toward recovery.

This work is made possible by AA members who volunteer their time to carry the message into these facilities and support the meetings on an ongoing basis.
